Catalogue Note
This fauteuil is basically identical to those delivered for Marie Antoinette for her Grand Cabinet at the Château de Saint-Cloud in 1787. They were part of a suite containing chairs, fauteuils, bergères, a canapé and tabourets de pieds made by the menuisiers Sené, Hauré, Vallois and Régnier. After the revolution the suite was dispersed among different royal châteaux and subsequently amended with later copies during the first half of the nineteenth century to furnish these residences. It is possible that the present fauteuil is one of these copies in spite of having a slightly different cresting. The model continued to be reproduced throughout the nineteenth century as the suite was highly favored.
