Catalogue Note

It is not entirely certain when distinctly miniature, as opposed to small, bottles became fashionable, but many can be dated to the Qianlong reign at the latest, so it was presumably quite an early concept. This rectangular form with raised panels on all faces was a standard eighteenth century shape, frequently used at Court, but continued into the later Qing period, but the workmanship here suggests an early example, probably from the eighteenth century. The shou character on the base is an extremely unusual feature for any bottle and, in combination with the form and material, makes the present bottle unique.
