Catalogue Note

Young Glasgow Welder (on his last ship) is distinctly direct in its examination of hope and desperation. The welder stands with a metal cast of the word ‘hope’, yet behind him we see the decaying river Clyde dockyards which served as the livelihood of so many young Scottish workers. The present work is typical of the New Glasgow Boys, who can be credited with the revival of ambitious figure painting in Scotland.
