Catalogue Note

Lauded as the first woman artist to embrace Cubism, Marevna was a prominent member of the artistic circles of Montparnasse. In 1915 she embarked on an tempestuous relationship with the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera, who often painted in her studio in Rue Asseline.

The offered lot is listed with the date 1917 in the inventory of Marevna's work compiled by Anya Teixeira, who met the artist in 1958 and provided much needed financial support at the end of her life. The painting may have been pre-dated by the artist.
