Condition
There are frame abrasions and there is wear and tear to the edges and corners. Very fine cracks are visible in places, such as the red of the peasant's scarf and there is cracking with minor associated paint loss between the two wheels on the left side of the cart. There is a light covering of surface dirt, with flecks in places and the sheet has discoloured. Some staining is present in the lower right corner. There is a small indentation in the board towards the centre of the left edge. Held behind glass in a red painted wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note
Esther M. Ridder was a descendant of the founder of the famous American news publishing firm, Knight Ridder, and owned a substantial collection of Russian art. She resided at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan where this painting hung for decades. The United Scenic Artists Local USA 829 Union stamp is found on the reverse of a number of works by Sudeikin.
