Catalogue Note
In December 1924, the Croisière noire expedition reaches the fortified town of Zinder, the former capital of the sultans of Niger. In the present work, Yakovlev depicts the northern gate of the fortress (Birni). An impressive structure with high walls and seven gates, this fortress is located in the Songo district of the town, easily recognisable from its interlocking terraces and crenelated roofs. In Dessins et Peintures d’Afrique. Croquis et notes de voyage, Yakovlev describes the Birni of Zinder as ‘a group of pink crystals born from the pink soil, mineral formations, cubes with vertical planes that have a light incline towards the centre. These are the houses of the Arabs, made from clay, with walls that become thicker towards the base’.
The present work is a study for the oil of the same name which was exhibited in 1926 at the Galerie Jean Charpentier and the Louvre, and was subsequently acquired by Georges-Marie Haardt.
