Condition

The canvas has been lined and the original tacking edges are missing. There are frame abrasions with some minor associated paint loss along the edges. There is stable craquelure throughout. There are stretcher bar marks along the left and right edges. Inspection under UV light reveals old scattered inpainting and retouching to the aforementioned craquelure and frame abrasions, but discoloured varnish prevents a more conclusive analysis. Held in a gold painted wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

In 1880 Kivshenko left Russia and spent the following four years in Germany and France. The paintings from this period would earn him the title of Academician upon his return in 1884. The present work dates from this sojourn in Europe, and according to Bulgakov (1890) was bought by an English collector.
