Catalogue Note
At the 1915-16 Itinerant Exhibition, Alexander Makovsky was the most represented artist with 20 paintings on display. 'The artist has improved in leaps and bounds, not by the day but by the hour,' wrote a contemporary, 'he has experienced a sort of renaissance... and plunged headlong into the beautiful world of ancient Russia' (N.Breshko-Breshkovsky quoted in Zabytie imena: russkaya zhivopis' XIX veka, 2004, p.408).
