Catalogue Note
As an exceptional student at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow, Erik Bulatov was granted permission to visit India in 1956. He travelled there on a freight ship, earning his passage by working as a sailor. A rare painting from his student years, Indian Market was inspired by his memories of this trip. It is close to two other compositions on this theme, Calcutta and At the Spring both published in Rieber’s list of works in 2012. Although the offered lot is sketchier and more experimental, it is a finished composition marking an important early period in the artist’s evolution.
