Condition

The canvas has been lined. There is a layer of surface dirt. There are flecks of paint loss to the left of the large wheel of the tractor, to the wall above the figure standing on the threshing machine, to the middle of the red roof, to the left of the barn door as well as minor losses in other places. There is fine craquelure in places. Inspection under UV light reveals some minor scattered retouching. Held in a gilt wooden frame with canvas slip. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

Tarkhov arrived in Paris in 1899 where he soon caught the attention of the Parisian public with his Impressionist paintings. Among his admirers was dealer Ambroise Vollard who held a dedicated exhibition for the artist in his gallery in 1906. In 1907, Tarkhov travelled outside Paris to the Chevreuse Valley and Orsay region to seek inspiration from rural subjects.

This work will be included in the forthcoming Nicholas Tarkhoff catalogue raisonné being prepared by the Nicholas Tarkhoff committee.
