Condition

Overall measurements: 345cm across the top, 343cm across the bottom, 419cm along left side, 425cm along right side Pile variable: 3 - 2mm varying to down to knotheads. Low pile especially visible within ivory ground of main field, as visible in the image. There is some oxidisation to browns within main field and border, for example to outlines within main field and to the dark brown and taupe colour in the palmettes, centre, left and right borders. There is an area of discolouration right of central lozenge motif as is visible in image and this area has some repairs. There are scattered repairs overall, including some re-piling to browns in palmette motifs. Top end lacking outer end guard, with some losses extending into pile of outer border. Small repile left of centre within outer border, and another repaired area of repile far right corner of outer border. Lower end with trimmed fringe across width, some small nicks within central section. Repair to lower left corner Both ends overlocked. Both sides cords reovercast. Some scattered small repairs and reweaves in areas overall, for example lower right quadrant of inner guard, horizontal section approx. 4cm high by 10cm wide. Repaired vertical split lower left vertical border above first demi-lune blue palmette, with glued tape applied to reverse and another similar repair also with tape on reverse to the right of this. And another similar small split upper left corner again with tape attached to reverse for support likewise a further on the right. Discolouration across the width in sections across the main field visible as darker colour is due to low pile. The carpet is an attractive furnishing carpet. Catalogue Note

Ziegler & Co. were an Anglo-Swiss producer and distributor of Persian carpets in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. Based in Manchester, the firm supplied western high end retailers with their designs which were modifications of traditional and classical Persian carpets. They had an office in Tabriz and employed artisans in Northwest Persia to weave their products.
