Catalogue Note

The Karachopt design is an iconic Caucasian pattern but differences of colour, scale and motifs within the group create endless variety (see Lot 5 in this sale for comparison). The present lot is close to the example seen in Herrmann, E., Von Uschak Bis Yarkand, Seltene  Orienteppiche Aus Vier Jahrhunderten, Germany, p.54, pl.16. Each incorporates similar colouring, elongated hooks within the medallion, the two rounded octagons - more commonly these would be squared - and  the inclusion of 'sycamore seed' motifs which are again uncommon. Within the field they have repeat 'rams horns' motifs and each has a very similar border. The present lot use more motifs overall, especially with the 'sycamore seeds' within the ivory octagonal medallion, which also has included a scattering of red as opposed to the plain ivory found in the Herrmann example. Likewise the inclusion of further 'rams horns' and circular motifs within the field is noticeable. The offered work is in outstandingly good condition for age with dense lustrous wool and intense colour.
