Catalogue Note
Saryk carpets with the omurga, or temirjinm, gul are rare; a published example is in the Wiedersperg Collection, Pinner, R. and Eiland Jr, M., Between the Black Desert and the Red Turkmen Carpets from the Wiedersperg Collection, USA, 1999, pl.5, pg.27. The offered lot has ten rows of four guls, resulting in its attractive squarish format, whilst the Wiedersperg has twelve rows, but there are other similarities, notably the border design and secondary guls. Unusually, the present lot has a slightly different inner design to the omurga gul than the Ersari style four crossed leaves normally illustrated. In the present work the centre of the gul has a geometric rosette design, which also displays variations in its colouring within each gul (see detail). The lot offered here is in exceptional condition with dense, lustrous wool and rich colour.
