Catalogue Note

This was probably a variant drawing for the second piece within A Spaniard in the Works, entitled 'The Fat Budgie'. Lennon provided his publisher, Tom Maschler, with a small number of alternative illustrations and this is one such example. The paper exactly matches the type used for four illustrations to accompany 'We must not forget... the General Erection', also published in A Spaniard in the Works (see Sotheby's New York, John Lennon 'You Might Well Arsk', 4 June 2014, lots 66-69).
