Catalogue Note
The first Italian translation of the Essays, one of two known copies, according to STC (the other is located at Lambeth Palace). The dedication to Cosimo de Medici is signed by Tobias Matthew, a close friend of Bacon's and later Archbishop of York (see lot 41). According to Gibson, the attribution of the Italian translation in the British Museum catalogue is unsubstantiated. "In the preface, at p. x, of The Conversion of Sir Tobie Matthew, ed. A. H. Mathew, 1904, referring to this transl. we read: 'This was not by Tobie, but the epistle dedicatory to the Duke of Genoa, which prefaces the book was from his pen.'"
