Catalogue Note

With an Audemars Piguet presentation box.

In 1972 Audemars Piguet presented the first ever Royal Oak. Its octagonal case with 8 screws was designed by the legendary watchmaker Gérald Genta. Audemars Piguet chose the name from a series of British Royal Navy ships which in turn had taken the name from the story of King Charles II who hid in the hollow of an Oak tree following the Battle of Worcester in 1651 against the Roundheads. The tree later became known as the "Royal Oak" a symbol of protection, reliability, and strength. The robust and masculine design of the watch coincides with its origin and Royal Oak has then been hailed by collectors as the ultimate icon of modern sports watch.
