The complete portfolio in three volumes, comprising 100 wood engravings printed in colours, 1974, three plates bearing the artist's name in pencil, numbered 384 on the justification and on a certificate of authenticity signed by Jean Estrade and Dr. Jawdat Naffouj, from the German edition of as large as 1000 (Field cites an intended edition of 1000, which was probably never completed), loose (as issued) on BFK Rives wove paper tipped to Arches paper mounts, with text in German, published by Dr. Jawdat Naffouj, Landstuhl, Germany, contained in the original vinyl-covered boards (red for Hell, purple for Purgatory, blue for Paradise) and matching slipcases
Condition
With full margins, in good condition, five sheets with pale light-staining recto and mount-staining with skinning and/or hinge remains on the mount verso (Hell Canto 16, Purgatory Canto 29, Paradise Canto 13, 16 and 31), occasional pale paper discoloration on the sheets issued with chalky paper backing, infrequent tiny foxing along lower sheet edges, a few sheets loose from the mounts. The boards and slipcase with wear and soiling, the red slipcase separating at the bottom panel. According to Field, the German edition included English translations of the text on smaller pages, these pages lacking from this set.
