Description
- Lewis Wickes Hine
- 'Tenement Home-Work, N. Y. City' (Shelling Nuts)
- gelatin silver print
mounted, signed in ink on the mount, signed, titled, and dated in ink and with the photographer's 'Interpretive Photography, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York' stamp on the reverse, 1910 (Passionate Journey, p. 126, variant)
Condition
This print is trimmed to the image and is in generally good condition.
The print is warm in tone and there is age-appropriate silvering in the darkest areas of the image. There are occasional emulsion losses at the edges of the print. The far upper left edge of the print appears slightly more brown/yellow. Faint, intermittent, pale yellow droplet-shaped deposits can be seen on the surface. There are two very subtle scratches, breaking the emulsion, with attendant white accretions (possibly original retouching) at the upper left corner in the hanging clothes and in the child's face at the center right edge. Graphite transfer (possibly from a previous mat) appears along the right edge.
The photographer's stamp on the reverse of the print reads:
Lewis W. Hine
Interpretive Photography
HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON
NEW YORK
The mount is soiled and has losses at all four corners. There are adhesive remains, stray pencil marks, and liquid droplet-shaped deposits on the reverse of the mount. 'R4C' and '2207' are written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse.
When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
