titled in ink and with the photographer's 'Interpretive Photography, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York' stamp on the reverse, circa 1930
Literature
Freddy Langer, The Empire State Building (New York, 1998), p. 88
Karl Steinorth, Lewis Hine: Passionate Journey, Photographs, 1905-1937 (Zürich, 1996), p. 200
Condition
This warm-toned gelatin silver print, on semi-glossy, double-weight paper, is trimmed to the image and is in generally good condition.
Age-appropriate silvering can be seen in the darkest areas of the photograph, mostly confined to the extreme bottom edge. Overall, the print has a pleasingly warm cast that is ever-so-slightly more apparent along the left and lower edges. There are 2 tears to the lower right corner, that have been repaired with several pieces of transparent tape on the reverse of the print. There are two very subtle gray lines parallel with the left and top edges, presumably cropping guides, on the print.
On the reverse of the print are annotations '1E' and '83' in pencil, as well as the photographer's stamp:
Lewis W. Hine
Interpretive Photography
HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON
NEW YORK
When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
Adhesive remains around the periphery on the reverse of the print indicate that this print was previously affixed to a mount.
This print's few condition issues are consistent with handling and age and they do not detract from its fine appearance.
