Description

  • Imogen Cunningham
  • Wandering Jew
  • Gelatin silver print
mounted, signed and dated in pencil on the mount, the photographer's credit label, with typed title and date, on the reverse, 1920, probably printed no later than the 1950s (Flora, pl. 28; Imogen!, p. 75)

Provenance

The photographer to Tom Eckstrom, circa 1974

Acquired by the present owner from the above, 1994

Condition

This warm-toned print, on paper with a glossy surface, is in generally excellent condition. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: faint silvering is visible in the dark areas; a pencil-point-sized impression that does not break the emulsion; and extremely faint vertical swipes on the surface. The cream-colored mount is slightly age-darkened at the periphery. When examined in raking light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.

Catalogue Note

Tom Eckstrom studied photography and graduated in 1974 from the San Francisco Art Institute.  He worked closely with Cunningham as her studio assistant in the 1970s until her death in 1976. It is likely that Cunningham mounted this older print when Eckstrom acquired it from her.
