Description

  • Brassaï
  • Fille de Joie, Quartier Italie (de Dos)
  • gelatin silver print
ferrotyped, signed and annotated in pencil, annotations in ink, and with the photographer's studio and copyright stamps on the reverse, framed, 1932, probably printed in the 1950s or early 1960s (Brassaï: The Monograph, p. 70)

Condition

This heavily ferrotyped print is in generally good to very good condition. As is typical of ferrotyped prints, surface pitting is visible. Long surface scratches are pervasive throughout the image, but are primarily visible in raking light. Also visible in high raking light are fingerprints, a few deposits of original retouching, sharp creases in the corners, and impressions from the photographer's stamps on the reverse of the print. These issues are characteristic of the majority of Brassai's pre-1970s prints. This print is trimmed to the image, and there is some wear and chipping to the edges and corners. The paper is wavy. On the reverse of the print, 'vintage' is written by the photographer in pencil. The photographer's copyright and studio stamps are as follows: '81, Rue Faubourg St-Jacques, Paris-XIV, Tél. 707-23-41' and '81, Rue du Faub.-St-Jacques, Paris-XIV - PORt-Royal 23-41.' Also on the reverse are the following notations in an unidentified hand in pencil or ink: 'Page 94'; 'No. 56' [circled]; 'Pl. 332'; and '970.'When examined under ultraviolet light, this print appears to fluoresce somewhat.
