Description

  • Brassaï
  • 'Marin en Bordée, Rue de Lappe'
  • Gelatin silver print
ferrotyped, signed, titled, dated, and annotated in pencil and with the photographer's studio and copyright stamps on the reverse, framed, circa 1932

Condition

This print is in generally good to very good condition. As is typical of ferrotyped prints, superficial surface scratches and occasional pitting are visible. In high raking light, a number of small sharp handling creases are visible overall, some of which appear to break the emulsion but are generally not distracting. Fingerprints and impressions from notations on the reverse of the print are also visible in raking light. These issues are characteristic of the majority of Brassai's pre-1970s prints. This print is trimmed to the image. There are a few tiny losses of emulsion along the edges and the tips of the corners are creased. There is a very small tear along the lower edge, which appears to have been expertly repaired on the reverse. The lower left and upper corners have been reinforced on the reverse with rice paper. On the reverse of the print are the photographer's following studio and copyright stamps: '81, Rue du Faub. St-Jacques, Paris XIV, Téléph.: Port-Royal 23-41' and '81, Faubourg St-Jacques, Paris 14eme, Tél. 707.23.41.' When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
