Description

  • Henri Cartier-Bresson
  • Hyères, France
  • gelatin silver print
signed in ink and blindstamped in the margin, framed, 1932, printed later (The Modern Century, p. 89; The Early Work, p. 100)

Provenance

Sotheby's New York, 6 April 1993, Sale 6407, Lot 254

Condition

This print, on semi-glossy, double-weight paper, is in generally excellent condition. As is typical of Cartier-Bresson's later prints, there are several scattered tiny deposits of the photographer's original retouching visible in raking light. A few very faint indentations in the margin are also visible in raking light. Overall, these issues are nearly indiscernible and do not detract from the image. Two notations are written in an unidentified hand on the reverse of the print in pencil: 'HCB29' and '7.11.89.'
