Description
- Berenice Abbott
- 'Stanton Street, #328-334'
- Gelatin silver print
the photographer’s Federal Art Project 'Changing New York' and '50 Commerce St.' studio stamps, and with title, date, and annotations in ink on the reverse, 1937 (Yochelson, Lower East Side, pl. 14)
Condition
This early contact print is on lightly-textured double-weight paper with a surface sheen. It is in generally excellent condition. Upon very close examination, there are 2 tiny white adhesions, in the lower left and upper right quadrants. As is characteristically seen in Abbott's 'Changing New York' prints from the period, there are small clamp impressions in the black margins from processing. There is a ¼-inch tear in the upper margin, which does not affect the image. The margin edges are rubbed (with some emulsion loss along the right and lower edges) and the corners are rounded.
The reverse of the print is appropriately age-darkened at the edges. The following information is annotated in ink: 'Stanton Street, #328-334,' 'Manhattan,' 'Neg-212-Code IA-3,' and '3/4/37.'
