Description

  • Berenice Abbott
  • 'OLD LAW TENEMENTS FROM FORSYTH AND EAST HOUSTON STREETS'
  • Gelatin silver print
numbered ‘207’ in the negative, the photographer's Federal Art Project 'Changing New York' and caption stamps, with title, date, and annotations in ink and pencil, on the reverse, 1937 (Yochelson, Lower East Side, pl. 17)

Condition

This early contact print, on smooth double-weight paper with a faint surface sheen, is in generally very good condition. There is some very faint mottled discoloration in the upper sky-area. As is characteristically seen in Abbott's 'Changing New York' prints from the period, there are small clamp impressions in the black margins from processing. The margin edges are rubbed, and the corners are bumped. There is a very small tear along the upper margin edge, which does not intrude upon or affect the image. The reverse of the print is faintly age-darkened at the edges. The 'Changing New York' caption stamp is annotated in ink and pencil with the following information: Title: 'Old Law Tenements from Forsyth and East Houston Streets' Place: 'Manhattan' Neg. # '207' Code: 'IA-5' Date: 'February 11, 1937'
