Condition

This photograph, on heavy double-weight paper with a smooth, glossy surface, is in generally excellent condition. Upon close examination, the following are visible: a tiny rust-colored deposit in the upper right quadrant; a small, faint linear impression in the lower left quadrant; and a diagonal, sharp crease that appears to break the emulsion near the tip of the lower right corner of the print. This print is trimmed to the image, and there is minor wear to the corners and along the upper and lower edges. There are small clamp impressions in the corners as is typical of Evans's prints. Judith Keller's book, 'Walker Evans: The Getty Museum Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the credit and studio stamps and labels Evans used throughout his career. No dates are given for Evans's name stamp (Keller A) and the Arnold Crane Collection stamp (Keller CRANE) that appear on the reverse of this print. As is frequently the case with photographs by Walker Evans, the printing date of this photograph is impossible to determine definitively. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce, indicating a lack of optical brighteners which were added to commercially prepared papers starting in the mid-1950s.
