Description

  • Relief of the Crucifixion surmounted by a lunette with God the Father
  • alabaster, mounted in an oak stand with remnants of gilding
  • South Netherlandish, circa 1500

Condition

Overall the condition of the alabaster is good with dirt throughout and some wear consistent with age. There are areas with paint spills to the surface, including at the edges of both reliefs, the Virgin's shoulders and around the knees, around St. John's knees. There are stable hairline fissures running from left to right at the height of Christ's waist and to the top right corner of the Crucifixion. There are few losses, including the lower left and upper right corner of the Crucifixion, the side of Christ's head, God the Father's nose, forehead and tiara, his proper right hand, the clouds around him, and the top edge of his lunette. The Virgin's veil has an area of restoration. Christ's nose is worn smooth. The oak frame has wear and losses to the painting throughout. The frame was constructed in sections; some joints are slightly open. There is some worming consistent with material around the edges of the backboard.
