- The Flight into Egypt
- ivory, on a modern metal mount
- South Netherlandish, 18th century
together with a French ivory Virgin and Child, Dieppe, 19th century, on a gilt wood base
Condition
Relief: Overall the condition of the ivory is very good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is minor stable hairline splitting to the ivory consistent with the material. There is a possible loss to the reins in Joseph's hand.
Virgin and Child: Overall the condition of the ivory is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is stable hairline splitting to the ivory consistent with the material, notably to the back, to the top of the Virgin's head, and slightly open splits to Christ's head. There is some dark fill in one of the crevices of the headdress, and there is some dark staining around a small insert to the top of the head which conceals the root canal. There is a small opening to the underside of the Virgin's chin where the root canal runs through. There are remnants of glue to the back at the bottom. The gilt wood base is in good condition with wear to the edges and the gilding.
