  • After a model by Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652–1725) South German, first half 18th century

Provenance

Condition

Overall the condition of the ivory is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is an original semi-circular ivory insert to the top edge of the relief, in place of the root canal cavity. There are white restoration residues in this area. The point of the root canal is just visible by an indent in the centre bottom edge. There is a prominent original incision to the top left edge. There is dirt to the crevices. There is some minor stable splitting to the ivory consistent with the material, notably to the right side (depth of the relief); there is a loss by a split at the bottom. There are some very minor scratches and abrasions, including to the Virgin's forehead. The ivory is darker in colour to the reverse; it is particularly dark to part of the left side of the relief (depth), which may signify the outer edge of the tusk. There are some slight abrasions to the edges of the relief. The metal mount is in good condition with minor dirt and wear.
