Condition
Oak relief: Overall the condition of the relief is good with wear and minor dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is some wear to the carving at the high points, including the faces. The surface of the wood is slightly dry. There are a few losses, including to the proper left arm of the man holding the woman at the front, the proper right hand of the turbaned man with a beard at the front, the forearm of the man standing behind the tree, and a few further hands and feet. There are also a few small losses to the branches and leaves of the tree. There is a small stable split to the wood running from the top of the portico down to the group of figures in the centre of the scene; some glue residue is visible in this area.
The wood frame is in good condition with some wear to the paint. There are a few minor losses to the carved decorations, and some of the joints at the corners are slightly open but stable.
Ivory relief: Overall the condition of the ivory is good with dirt and some wear to the surface consistent with age, with particular dirt in the crevices. There is some minor stable splitting, consistent with the material, particularly at the back. There is a very small opening at the satyr's proper left lower leg.
Ivory corpus: Overall the condition of the ivory is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is particular dirt to the hair and the perizonium. There is minor hairline splitting consistent with the material, notably at the chest and the legs. The ivory is composed in sections; original stable joints are visible at the shoulders. The INRI plaque may be later.
The wood frame is in good condition with some wear to the paint and gilding and minor non-active worming, particularly at the corner.
