Description
- Two Paxes with the Virgin and Child and the Crucifixion
- Virgin and Child: ivory in a gilt wood and velvet frame
Crucifixion: partially gilt ivory - Netherlandish, probably Utrecht, circa 1440-1470
Condition
Virgin and Child: Overall the condition of the ivory is good with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and handling. There is particular dirt to the crevices. The surface has worn slightly at the high points of the figures and the ivory is slightly discoloured in these areas due to handling. There is some stable splitting to the ivory consistent with the material, visible particularly at the top and bottom edge. There are two small areas with plaster fill to the left and right sides of the relief.
The wood frame is in good condition with wear to the gilding.
Crucifix: Overall the condition of the ivory is good with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and handling. There is particular wear to Christ's face and feet. There are a few losses, including two areas at the outer edge of the arch at the top, and a scroll above the column on the left. There are discoloured remnants of gilding in several areas, including the cross and the striated background. There is minor stable splitting to the ivory consistent with the material. There are three small holes; one at the top and one at the bottom of the crucifix, and another at the bottom.
