Description
- Mortar with the arms of the Riatti family
- inscribed: AD / 1600 to the cartouche and: FR. RIATTI REGE. TE(?) to the coat of arms
- bronze
- Italian, probably Bologna, 18th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the mortar is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age and particular dirt in the crevices. There are layers of lacquer patina, which are flaking in several areas. There are several minor lacunae, in particular to the bottom rim. There is particular wear to the ends of both handles, consistent with use. There are several nicks and scratches to the edges and particular scratches to the underside. There are a few splashes of white paint, including to the floral band at the top. There are a few areas of greening to the bronze, notably around the bottom and the top sections.

Catalogue Note
Another mortar bearing the coat of arms of the Bolognese Riatti family, dated to the 18th century, was sold at Fraysse & Associés, Paris, 10 March 2010, as lot 224. The present mortar compares closely to an example dated 1795, which sold in these rooms on 6 July 2007 (lot 51).
