Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The figure was originally made with an open reverse. The black lacquer patina has flaked and rubbed in several areas, in particular at the high points. There are several minor nicks and scratches, notably to the abdomen and the proper left thigh. There is red and green wax residue to the underside at the bottom. The modern wood base is in good condition with minor wear to the edges.

Catalogue Note

The figure's pose recalls that of the Belvedere Antinous, the celebrated antique marble which was discovered in Rome before 1543. Its open back suggests that the bronze may have been part of a larger ensemble.
