Description
- Tower Cross
- wrought iron, on a modern metal stand
- Netherlandish, 16th century
the cockerel possibly associated
Condition
The cross has been mounted on a modern base and has a possibly later copper rooster mounted on it. The cross itself is corroded throughout and was then relacquered to prevent losses. The quatrefoil at the centre of the cross is warped and has a hole to one of the leaves. A section of the upper arm of the cross just above the rooster has been lost. There are some losses to the lacquer, including to around the nails that connect the individual sections of of iron, around the quatrefoil in the centre, and to two of the foliate sections at the base. The rooster consists of several sections, two of which, the tail and the head, have been reattached using lead.
There is corrosion throughout the base plate of the modern stand; much of its lacquer has been lost.
