Description
- Large casket
- certosina wood, bone, horn and pewter on a pine core
- Italian, Venice, 15th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the casket is good with wear and some dirt to the surface consistent with age and handling. There are a few losses to the inlay and numerous replacements clearly distinguished by colour differences, particularly on the lid, the reverse, and to the bone on the lower edge. The hinges are slightly loose and have some corrosion. There is a loss to the wood around the left hinge on the interior. The interior was stripped of a lining revealing some worming and minor splitting consistent with material, particularly to the underside of the lid. A nearly square section of wood was inserted into the back panel suggesting that either the wood was reappropriated or the casket was altered (the lid reversed and the lock covered).
