Description

  • Casket
  • certosina wood and bone, with brass mounts
  • Italian, Florence or Venice, circa 1500

Condition

Overall the condition of the casket is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are dirt marks throughout, notably on the bone panels and in the crevices. The inlay in a triangular area at the far left side of the front edge of the lid is lost. There is particular wear to the inlay where the ends of the metal handle rub against the surface at the top, and there is a small loss to the inlay in one of these areas on the right. There is wear to the bottom edges and corners of the casket. There are several chips and abrasions to the edges and corners of the bone panels. The lid does not fit evenly when closed, and the lock is slightly warped. The gilding on the lining inside is largely worn. The key is functioning. There are a few losses to the wood on the underside due to non-active worming.
