Description

  • Casket
  • partially gilt, polychromed and ebonised wood set with mother-of-pearl
  • Italian, Venice, second half 16th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the casket is good with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The casket is composed in sections of wood and joints are visible at the corners and some of the edges; some of them are slightly open, notably one at the outer section of the top of the lid. There is minor wear to the gilding and polychromy on the wood and the mother-of-pearl; some of the gilding on the wood may have been refreshed, including at one of the corners. There is a plaster restoration at one of the corners of the body of the casket at the top, which is hanging loose. There is minor stable splitting to several of the mother-of-pearl plaques. A few of the mother-of-pearl plaques do not cover their sections fully, and the uncovered areas have been painted in silver. The lid fits slightly unevenly on one side.
