Condition

Overall the condition of the ring is good with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is some scratching to the gold and there are a few nicks to the shoulder and the underside of the shank. There are a few minor nicks and tears to the edges of the setting.

Mourning rings mounted with a coffin-shaped rock crystal stone under which an enamelled gold skull or entire skeleton was visible became popular among the British elite around 1700. The British Museum contains three comparable rings (inv. nos. AF.1616, 1864, 1103.1, and AF.1615).
