Description
- Retable with the Resurrection, Saint Peter, and Saint Paul
- gilt and polychromed wood, on a blue fabric covered mount
- Spanish, 16th century
Provenance
private collection, Belgium
Condition
Overall the condition of the wood is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The retable would once have been part of a larger ensemble and is composed in sections. Joints are consequently visible and it is possible that the retable could have been reassembled. Open joints can be seen where the middle door panels connect with the rest. The lock is missing and there are lacunae where this would have been fitted. There is non-active worming evident throughout, particularly on the right side of the retable. There are some losses on the left side of the door panel due to worming. There is some splitting to the wood consistent with material, and a noticeable joint running through the right side panels. There are various minor chips and abrasions. The polychromy appears to be largely original but was probably refreshed in areas.
