Description

  • Strong box
  • oak, with iron mounts and three metal keys
  • South Netherlandish, circa 1600

Condition

Overall the condition of the box is good, with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. A lacquer has been applied to the wood throughout. Some of the joints between the sections of wood are slightly open but stable, particularly on the lid. There are several chips and nicks to the wood, consistent with use, notably to the lid and to the edges. There is some evidence of past worming having led to minor losses, which is visible in particular at the back near the top. There is wear to the iron mounts, including corrosion. The three keys fit into the locks but do not appear to lock them.
