Description
- Richard Wright of Liverpool
- British men o' war in an estuary
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is discoloured. There are some hairline cracks in the paint surface, in a 'C' shape in the clouds to the right of the central ship, and in 3 vertical lines running down towards the shore, lower right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to reduce the appearance of craquelue in the sails of the central ship and in the sky on the left. There is some strengthening to the darker pigments in the foreground sea and shore, as well as in the clouds. There is some repaint along the lower margin with some minor, pinprick losses.
