Description

  • Thomas Luny
  • Portsmouth from Spithead;The entrance to Cork harbour
  • previously signed and inscribed on the reverse
  • a pair, both oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 16 November 1989, lot 5, for £17,000;
With Richard Green, London (according to labels on the reverse).

Condition

Both canvases have firm relinings that have slightly flattened the paint surfaces. The varnish on each appears clear and even, there are some surface accretions and dirt, but no damage visible. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a campaign of sensitively executed tiny retouchings and strengthenings scattered throughout both canvasses, the boats in the view of Portsmouth appear relatively untouched, there are some retouchings in the rigging and hull of the boat in the Entrance to Cork Harbour, and a very small degree of wear in the hull of the main boat. Otherwise the pair appear to be in fair condition. Both pictures are offered in matching carved and gilt wood frames with a few chips and losses.
