Description

  • Gaspard Dughet
  • Two men with cattle in an italianate landscape, with a ruined castle on a promontory in the distance
  • bears signature lower right: CLA.G
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Provenance

In the collection of the family of the present owners for the last fifty years.

Condition

The canvas has an old relining. The paint surface is secure, although the colours have darkened. A vertical band of retouching measuring approximately 8 by 3 cm is visible in the branches of the taller tree. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a cloudy varnish and confirms the above retouching, as well as revealing other very few scattered retouchings, mainly confined to the lower third of the painting. The picture is unframed.

Catalogue Note

The figure of the standing shepherd, as well as the cattle, seem to be related to a drawing by Claude Lorrain in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, whose composition was etched in 1635.We are grateful to Marcel Rothlisberger for suggesting an attribution to the circle of Dughet, on the basis of a photograph.
