Catalogue Note

The handling of this small sketch bears some resemblance to the work of the Sienese artist, Pietro Sorri (1558-1622), particularly in the articulation of the figures of the Madonna and Child. See, for example, the rendering of the figures in the bozzettien grisaille of the Miracle of the loaves and the fish and the Presentation of the Virgin in the temple (Florence, Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, inv. nos 19154 and 19156).1

This lot is sold along with Cain and Abel, by Pietro Mera, called Il Fiammingo (Brussels 1570 - active in Florence and Venice circa 1639): oil on copper, framed; signed lower right: .DE MERA . F (ME in ligature); 42.5 by 31.6 cm.; 16 3/4  by 12 1/2  in.
