Catalogue Note
Sir James Palmer painted miniature copies after pictures in the Royal Collection, which he helped to form. Indeed according to Ellis Waterhouse the present work is a copy after a composition by Cornelis van Poelenburgh. Palmer also painted portrait miniatures of James I and members of the Court in a style derived from Isaac Oliver. A man of many talents, he was elected twice as an MP and became Chancellor of the Order of the Garter under Charles I.
