Catalogue Note
The present work depicts a panoramic view of Calais, seen from the landward side, looking over the fortified ramparts surrounding the town to its roofs and spires, and beyond to the sea. The simplified and reduced setting and arrangement of figures recalls an engraving of 1685, by Adrian Frans Baudouin and Robert Bonnart, after a composition by Van der Meulen.1
