Description

  • Andries van Eertvelt
  • Marine battle between Turks and Christians
  • oil on canvas, unlined

Condition

The canvas is unlined and a horizontal seam line runs the width of the canvas, approximately a third from the lower edge of the picture. There is an extensive network of craquelure throughout the paint surface, which is rather dirty with a discoloured varnish. There are areas of old retouching and strengthening throughout the work, in the sails of the ships for example, some of which has discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals patches of restoration to areas of paint loss in the sky in the centre and upper left. There is additional retouching to reduce the appearance of the craquelure in several areas.
