Condition
The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. This painting is in good overall condition. There are two old vertical splits or joins in the panel, running approximately 5 cm. and 3 cm. from left and right edges, respectively. Ultraviolet light is deflected by the old varnish, but apart from some retouching to the left-hand split, there seems to have been little intervention. The picture would benefit from cleaning.

Catalogue Note
The present work is a copy after Dou's painting, most likely dating to circa 1670, sold in New York, Sotheby's, 8 June 2007, lot 212, formerly in the collection of Prince Gagarin, St. Petersburg. Another version of the picture, once owned by W. Crommelin, is exhibited in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Geneva, as attributed to Dou (see W. Martin, Gerrit Dou. Klassiker der Kunst, Stuttgart and Berlin 1913, reproduced p. 112). The number of period and later repetitions and variants of Dou's original work attests to the immediate and prolonged popularity of this charming image.
