K. Bauch, Jakob Adriaensz Backer, Berlin 1926, no. 178 (as by Backer, alongside its companion piece, present whereabouts unknown. Both are listed as oil on panel and with dimensions of 120 x 90 cm).
Condition
The canvas has been relined.
The paint surface is covered by a very dirty varnish which is no longer effective. There are thin surface scratches, and scattered discoloured retouchings throughout the background. A small lost paint flake bu the lower part of the right margin. There is a large T-shaped tear in the left shoulder, measuring 15 by 25 cm., which has not been stitched up.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a very old and uneven varnish; an old area of repainting in the lower right corner (6 x 6 cm.); recent repainting around the T-shaped tear mentioned above; and finally, small scattered retouchings in the background.
