Description
- Two musicians, playing a guitar and a pipe, with another figure
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has an old relining. The paint surface is secure, although thin in some places. The paint surface is covered by a layer of dirt and the varnish has yellowed. Traces of good quality impasto are present in the faces and hands. The dirt makes it difficult to detect retouchings although there do seem to be some minor retouchings in the hands and there is one very small discoloured retouching in the forehead of the central figure. However, the work does seem to be largely free of retouchings. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even varnish which makes it difficult to detect any retouchings. Under the layer of dirt, there is much good quality original paint work in good condition and the picture should respond very well to cleaning.
The work is offered in a gilt carved frame with a scrolling vine motif, with a few minor knocks and losses.
